Old Firm Hold Senior Presentation Evening

BBC presenter Phil Steele was the guest speaker at Mountain Ash RFC’s senior presentation evening held at the clubhouse.

 

Guests were given a summary of the 2018/19 season.

 

1st XV

Finished 7th in Division 1 East Central with a playing record of:

Played 22, Won 10, Lost 12, accumulating 55 points, which just one point behind Cambrian Welfare, 2 points behind Rhiwbina and 5 points behind 4th placed Treorchy. Gained 15 bonus points from the 22 games played, which was more than any other team in the division.

 

In total, 27 games were played, 13 won and 14 lost.

 

There were a lot of close games during the season.

 

6 games were won by 3 points or less: Gilfach Goch at home, 21-20, 27-26 at home against eventual champions Glamorgan Wanderers in the most exciting game of the season, 16-14 at home against Skewen in the SWALEC Plate, 16-15 at home against Cambrian Welfare in the Mid District Cup, 30-27 away to St Joseph’s, and 17-15 against Rumney after coming back from 15-0 down.

 

8 games were lost by close margins: 9-7 away at Dinas Powys, 23-20 at Bridgend Athletic, 16-15 in Rumney, 10-8 away to Pwllheli in the SWALEC Plate, 20-19 away to Porth, 29-23 at home against Cambrian Welfare, 10-3 away to Cambrian Welfare, and 13-6 away to Gilfach Goch.

 

Three wins in the last three games, during which 14 league points were gained from a possible 15, confirmed the club’s Division 1 status. One of these wins was the 30-24 win in Treorchy when a 21-7 half time deficit was overturned by a strong second half performance by the pack.

 

Champions Glamorgan Wanderers and 2nd placed Rumney and 4th placed Treorchy were all beaten, and there were two close losses against 3rd placed Bridgend Athletic.

 

Leading 1st appearances:

Out of the 27 games played, 26 were made by scrum half Ross Davies, second row and captain Jarrod Parfitt, and centre, flanker or second row David Richards,

25 were made by No.8 Kriss Sanders,

23 by outside half / full back Morgan James, tighthead prop Geraint Lock, and centre Alex Hughes, and,

22 by flanker Jordan Coxley and second row Adam Parry 22.

 

Chris Edmunds played his 370th 1st XV game in the away 30-24 win over Treorchy in the last game of the season and scored a try as well. He is the leading 1st XV appearance holder in league rugby.

 

Geraint Lock played his 200th 1st XV game during the season and was awarded his club cap. His name will be the 38th to be added to the club cap board.

 

Leading Points Scorers were wing Will Holley with 100 and full back Jack Roberts with 56.

 

The top try scorers were scrum half Ross Davies and prop James Cowdry with 8 apiece centre Alex Hughes got 7, David Richards and outside half / full back Morgan James scored 6 each. James Cowdry scored two tries in each of the last three games – 2 against Porth at home, 2 in Llantrisant and 2 in Treorchy.

2nd XV

Played 18, won 12, lost 6, with 582 points scored, which included 94 tries, and 263 conceded.

 

Finished 4th in the Rhondda and East Glamorgan Championship with a playing record of played 10, won 7. Lost away to eventual champions Brecon 2nd XV 18-17 and beat Porth 2nd XV, who finished in 3rd place, 44-14.

 

There were some big wins:

80-12 at home to Bedlinog 2nd XV, 56-0 at home to Nelson 2nd XV, 50-0 away to Ynysybwl 2nd XV, and 77-7 away to Llantrisant 2nd XV.

 

Scrum half Jonathan Lock captained the team for the 8th consecutive season, and what a great job he did on and off the field for the club.

 

Leading try scorers were hooker Jordan Howe and scrum half Jon Lock with at least 8 each.

 

The recipients of the evening’s awards were as follows:

 

Athletic / 2nd XV Player of the Year: Scrum half Jonathan Lock,

Athletic / 2nd XV Players’ Player of the Year: Scrum half Jonathan Lock.

 

Jonathan Lock captained the 2nd XV for an 8th consecutive season and he has been a mainstay of the team for more than that. In recognition of his work on and off the field, he was also given a long service award.

 

Most Promising 1st XV Player: Backrow forward Daniel Phillips,

Most Improved 1st XV Player: Outside half / full back Morgan James,

1st XV Players’ Player of the Year: Scrum half Ross Davies,

1st XV Player of the Year: Flanker Jordan Coxley.

 

Flanker Chris Edmunds, who took his total of 1st XV appearances up to 370 during the season, was also recognised and given a long service award.

 

The Old Firm start training for the new season on Tuesday 2 July. Any player wishing to come along and be part of a Division 1 East Central Mount squad that has exciting potential should report to the Mountain Ash 3G pitch at 6:45pm.
