Superb 2nd Half Rugby by Young Firm

After the fixture against Treorchy Youth was cancelled due to the Rhondda club withdrawing from the Blues Youth League, the Young Firm went looking for a friendly and found it near Llanelli, in nearby Burry Port.

Mountain Ash started off like a train, forward Mitchell Barnard putting the Young Firm ahead with a typical barnstorming run. Mount then counter attacked from their own 22 and centre Jamie Long run the length of the field to score under the posts to make it 12-0. Burry Port woke up and scored 3 soft tries to take the lead, 17 – 12, with just three minutes to half time. The Young Firm also awoke from their slumbers and after a good kick off from Morgan Cartwright, Burry Port knocked on, and from the resulting scrum, No.8 Ryan Jenkins picked up from the back of the scrum and burst over to score under the posts. The conversion made it 19-17 to Mount at half time.

The second half was just a Mount fest with Ryan Jenkins totally unplayable at times and Burry Port just unable to stop him. His brother Owen wasn’t far behind him, and Ethan James, the other member of the back row was also having a fine game, making a nuisance of himself at every opportunity. Morgan Cartwright was having a great game at outside half and the Mount backs were now on fire. Jarrod Cushion, Jamie long, Jak Thomas and Rhys “Potchy” Williams all made great runs which blew the young Burry Port backline away in the last 20 minutes. Five tries were scored in the second half. Ryan Jenkins completed a hat-trick, Jamie Long got a second try, Jarrod Cushion scored a lovely try from way out, and Morgan Cartwright finished off with a “show and go” to score under the posts. A great display by Mount but Burry Port were excellent and had a lot of first team players out, and with their full team it will be a closer affair if the teams play again. A special mention must go to forwards Mitchell Barnard and Owain Jenkins who both put in great performances, but the Man of the Match was given to Ryan Jenkins who was simply unstoppable.

Burry Port Youth 17 Mountain Ash Youth 52
