The last kick of the match, a 38 metre penalty, condemned the Young Firm to their first defeat of the season. Although the home team started strongly and led 7-0, Mount replied with three first half tries through scrum half Morgan Cartwright, wing Garrin Williams, and prop Kieran Coomer, two of which were converted by Cartwright, to go into half time 19-10 up. The Young Firm’s best period of the game was either side of half time, but they couldn’t build on their lead after that. A converted Abercynon try brought them back to 19-17 down, and then a penalty award just inside the Mount half was made 10 metres shorter due to the ball being kicked away, the final whistle sounding after it was converted. The Young Firm need to work on their fitness so that they can sustain the play they showed either side of half time for the full 80 minutes. Another local derby awaits Mount this week when Aberdare Youth visit either the Rec or Caedrawnant, kick off is 2:30pm.
